History of the Riva Aquarama Special
Often described as the “Rolls-Royce of the sea” or the “Stradivarius of boating”, the Riva Aquarama Special is an icon of Mediterranean elegance and one of the most celebrated yachts in maritime history. Between 1962 and 1996, only 720 Aquarama units – in all their Super and Special variants – were ever built.
The Aquarama story began in the summer of 1962, when Carlo Riva and designer Giorgio Barilani transformed a Riva Tritone into a new, more refined craft. The first prototype, named LIPICAR I after Carlo Riva’s three daughters, debuted in Monaco and impressed during its sea trials, piloted by Giovanni Agnelli, head of FIAT. Its name, Aquarama, referenced both the sweeping panoramic views from its chrome-framed windscreen and the era’s fascination with giant cinema screens.
From 1962 to 1971, 288 Aquarama units were built, powered by V8 engines reaching speeds of up to 40 knots. This was followed by the Super Aquarama (1963–1971), with more powerful engines, and finally the Aquarama Special from 1972 to 1995, featuring its distinctive transom and reaching 8.75 metres in length with twin 350 hp engines. The Aquarama Special remains the longest, most powerful, and most iconic of all Riva creations – a masterpiece of performance, craftsmanship, and style.
